Where can I find course descriptions, prerequisite information, and when courses are offered?

The Undergraduate Bulletin, also known as the course catalog, is an online reference to help you understand university requirements, policies and course descriptions. It can also answer questions you may have about prerequisites, majors, minors, general education, which semesters courses are offered and more.

What should I see when I look at my DegreeWorks portal?

DegreeWorks displays your program of study worksheet based upon the program, course information, catalog year in the Banner student data system and the curriculum scribed in DegreeWorks.

If you are degree-seeking, you should see a degree block and a major block -- and a concentration block if your major requires a concentration.  You should also see a General Education block, unless you have met those requirements in some way (CCC CORE, GEP MET, etc.)

As an advisor, can I ignore courses in Fallthrough?

No, it is important to review courses in this section for potential substiutions and to ensure the audit is functioning properly. If you find a course in the Fallthrough section that satisfies a major requirement, please follow the appropriate substitution request for your department.
(See How do I submit a substitution or waiver request below for more information)

What is a catalog year and how can I find out which catalog year I am in?

A student's catalog year is the year he / she began attending Appalachian State University, not the year the student declared a major.  The Program of Study and Four-Year Guides for a major / minor / general education must follow the same catalog year.

Students may change their catalog year by completing the Add or Change Major / Minor / Catalog Year Form on the College of Fine and Applied Arts website if they are currently declared in the college.

What is the policy for repeating a course?

Beginning Fall 2014 for all undergraduate students, the policies for repeating courses and for grade forgiveness are defined as:

What do the categories (blocks) in DegreeWorks mean?

Requirement Block: This block shows a summary of degree requirements, indicates the fulfillment status of each requirement or refers you to other blocks. You can also find the catalog year in which the program of study and four-year guides must be followed for your major / minor and general education requirements.

Courses approved to meet a program requirement are in "fallthrough." How do we fix that?

If you have approved course substitutions and the deparatment chair also approves, he/ she must forward an email to the appropriate staff member in the Dean's Office, who will post as appropriate in DegreeWorks.

How can I overload courses for a semester?

A full-time semester for an undergraduate student is defined as 12-18 semester hours in fall/spring, or 12 semester hours during the summer (6-7 hours in a five-week summer term).  Anything above this is considered an overload.

An undergraduate student may be granted approval from his/her Dean’s Office to take an overload if the following GPA requirements are met:

What if the major, concentration, or minor is listed incorrectly?

DegreeWorks is a front end for information in the Banner student data system, so DegreeWorks displays only what is recorded as the official program(s).  The information is updated each night, and so changes made today will be available for view the following morning

To add/change majors, minors, concentrations, or catalog year,  work with your advisor to submit the appropriate Change of Major/Minor/Catalog Year Form.

What if I see an error in the worksheet?

Notify the the appropriate staff member in the Dean's Office with specific information including the student's name, major, Banner ID, what the error is and where on the audit it was noticed.
