Advising Timeline


The academic advising timeline identifies opportunities students should discuss and consider throughout their educational journey.  While this timeline establishes the typical situation, we understand students move at different paces through their academic careers.

Advising Timeline

  1. Navigate Appalachian's website to learn about campus resources, university policies, academic calendar and more.

  2. Familiarize yourself with AppalNet (your student portal) and learn how to add / drop classes, create a mock schedule, view your financial aid and review your student account.

  3. Learn the requirements to declare a major / minor.

  4. Schedule an appointment with the Career Exploration Office for career counseling, self-assessment, discovering and exploring career options / majors and strategizing your career goals / values.  Attend Majors Fair and Career Exploration Fair in October.

  5. Visit the Office of Campus Activities and get involved on campus by joining clubs and organizations (academic / non-academic) to develop and grow leadership and interpersonal skills, build your social network, explore personal interests and apply information learned in the classroom to real-world issues.

  6. Visit the Office of International Education and Development to learn more about study abroad opportunities.
  1. Officially declare your major / minor early your sophomore year and create a plan for completion utilizing programs of study, Four Year Guides, the Undergraduate Bulletin (Course Catalog) and DegreeWorks.

  2. Receive a faculty advisor and discuss career goals, plan for graduation and involvement in your major.

  3. Visit the Office of Campus Activities and get involved on campus by joining clubs and organizations (academic / non-academic) to develop and grow leadership and interpersonal skills, build your social network, explore personal interests and apply information learned in the classroom to real-world issues.

  4. Identify local volunteer opportunities that are related to your major and interests.

  5. Visit the Career Development Center to make an appointment for career counseling, explore career opportunities, create a resume and cover letter, apply for internships, participate in mock interviews and networking events and attend Majors Fair in October and / or internship workshops.

  6. Visit the Office of International Education and Development to learn more about study abroad opportunities.
  1. Discuss post-graduation options with your faculty advisor.  Options regarding graduate school or if you plan on entering the workforce.

  2. Visit the Career Development Center to make an appointment for career counseling, explore career information, create a resume/cover letter, apply for internships, mock interviews, networking, attend career fairs and workshops for internships and job opportunities.

  3. Explore research opportunities with the Office of Student Research.

  4. Join a regional or national professional organization in your field of study.

  5. Identify local volunteer opportunities that are related to your major and interests.

  6. Visit the Office of International Education and Development to learn more about study abroad opportunities.

  7. Review your email for a Senior Check conducted by FAA Dean's Office and implement a plan to finalize courses needed senior year.
  1. Review your degree audit with your faculty advisor and apply for graduation.

  2. Apply for graduate schools.

  3. Visit the Career Development Center to make an appointment for career counseling, refine your resume and cover letter, discuss job search tactics, conduct mock interviews, learn networking skills and attend career fairs.

  4. Graduate and become an alumnus of Appalachian!
