Can I enroll in a graduate level course as an undergraduate student?

Senior undergraduate students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and undergraduate non-degree seeking students with an equivalent background must complete the Senior Undergrad Request Form in order to attain permission to enroll in a graduate level course.

Courses approved to meet a program requirement are in my "fallthrough" block. How can I fix that?

Work with your advisor to seek approval and they will submit a substitution request per established guidelines. The dean's office record staff will update Banner and DegreeWorks after approval from the chair.

Some students have declared minors but no courses are filled in the minor block. Why is that?

Some minors don't specify courses but instead require that courses will be chosen in conjunction with faculty members. In this case it's very important that a copy of the MINOR CONTRACT be submitted to the appropriate college Dean's Office for the student's major. That office will enter all approved courses.

How can I take courses at another institution and transfer credit to Appalachian?

Also known as Visiting Coursework, students who wish to take courses at another collegiate institution must receive approval PRIOR to enrollment at the other institution.  Failure to secure prior approval may result in the coursework being deemed unacceptable for transfer.

How do I request a substitution for a required course in my program (major or concentration)?

If you advisor approves of the course substitution, he / she will submit a substitution request per established guidelines. The College of Fine and Applied Arts Dean's Office staff will update DegreeWorks after approval.

The student is taking transfer credit to satisfy some requirements. I don't see where the transfer credit is displayed.

Transfer credit will be entered into Banner (and thus in DegreeWorks) once an official transcript showing acceptable grades from the transfer institution has been received and processed by the Office of Transfer Services. Until then, any planned transfer credit should be referenced in a note at the bottom of the audit.

Why is important to make notes in DegreeWorks? How can I make a note?

Documenting notes in DegreeWorks during and after an advising appointment is a vital component of advising. Notes are visible to the student and any university employee with access to DegreeWorks. Notes document your discussion with students and provide detailed information if any discrepancies occur or grievances are filed. Notes are most beneficial when they are detailed and include information such as follow-up items and responsibilities of student, critical class(es) for upcoming semester, pin number, etc.

How can I appeal to have coursework that transferred to Appalachian as an elective credit apply to a specific App State course?

Students may petition to have any course designated as Elective credit equated to a specific App State course, by initiating the Transfer Coursework Petition process.  Please see Transfer Services for complete information and the Petition for Transfer Credit Form.

Can I receive credit for a course by taking an exam instead of enrolling in the course?

Yes, students who wish to place out of a course should consult with the department chairperson of the course in question. Not all courses are subject to credit examination.

If arrangements can be made, a fee of $50.00 is charged for each examination and must be paid to the Student Accounts Office in the John E. Thomas Building. The original receipt must be submitted to the department chair with the Credit by Examination Form before final approval can be given.

What if I see an error in the worksheet?

Check first with your advisor!  If your advisor confirms that there is an error, notify The College of Fine & Applied Arts dean's office with specific information including  your name, Banner ID, major, and what/where on the audit that the error was noticed.
