Appalachian State University’s Goodnight Family Department of Sustainable Development successfully held a campus farmers' market on Oct. 26 . The event, which took place on Sanford Mall, hosted vendors of local fruits and vegetables, jewelry, crafts and baked goods. The market also offered yoga sessions and information on each of the varied components of sustainability.
By bringing together local farmers, vendors and students, the department hopes that the market will reinforce community relations to help draw attention to the importance of sustainably farmed, local food and issues like food insecurity.
“The campus farmers' market does much more than sell produce and products. It becomes a hub for building long-lasting relationships, where diverse people gather and Appalachian students and faculty and local residents learn together about health, food security and justice and new forms of entrepreneurship,” said Assistant Professor Anatoli Ignatov of the Sustainable Development Department.
Due to the success of the October event, the department plans to hold one more market this semester which will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m-2 p.m. on Sanford Mall.
