Taylor Walker’s Rise to Success in the Design World

Even as a student at Appalachian State University, Taylor Walker stood out. Today, at just 26 years old, she stands at the top of her game as a kitchen and bath design professional, recently earning her a spot in the prestigious National Kitchen & Bath Association's (NKBA) Thirty Under 30 Class of 2025. But her success isn't just about talent—it's the story of persistence, creativity, and a deep passion for her craft.

Growing up in a family that ran Walker Woodworking & Greenbrook Design, Taylor was immersed in the world of custom cabinetry and design from an early age. That foundation gave her a sense of direction, but it was her time at Appalachian State University that transformed her natural strengths into a thriving career.

"I graduated in 2021 with a degree in Interior Design and a minor in Business, which was the perfect combination to prepare me for this field," Taylor shared. "At App State, I learned the fundamentals of design, but more importantly, I gained confidence through hands-on studio projects and collaboration with amazing professors and classmates."

While most students pivoted to virtual internships during COVID, Taylor found an unexpected silver lining. Her internship shifted to her family's business, offering her invaluable insight into the cabinetry industry and the chance to build her skills early. By the time she graduated, Taylor was already designing independently, which enabled her to hit the ground running.

Climbing the Ladder of Success Early
Taylor officially joined Greenbrook Design full-time in 2020, even as she was completing her degree. At an age when many recent graduates are just starting their first full-time jobs, Taylor had already cemented her place in her family's business. By 2023, she had advanced to the role of Senior Kitchen & Bath Designer, a testament to her talent and work ethic.

Her days are a dynamic mix of creative and technical tasks. From on-site measurements to client meetings and overseeing cabinet production, Taylor approaches each project with the same enthusiasm and dedication that has defined her career. She even takes clients on tours of the woodworking shop, offering them a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the craftsmanship of their custom pieces.

"No two days are the same," Taylor explained. "Every moment, whether it's designing a functional layout or seeing a client's face light up when their vision comes to life, reminds me why I love what I do."

One particularly memorable project for Taylor was designing the kitchen for Seven Gables, a National Historic Preservation Home in Shelby, NC. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity exemplified her ability to bring both innovation and respect for tradition to her designs.

Making Her Mark on the Design Industry
Taylor's success extends far beyond individual projects. Under her leadership, Greenbrook Design has seen significant growth, with over 100 projects completed in just four years. Her influence also reaches the broader design community. Recently, Taylor served as a judge for the NKBA's Innovative Showroom Contest, further solidifying her reputation as a forward-thinking leader in her field.

But it's her recognition as part of the NKBA Thirty Under 30 Class of 2025 that truly cements her status as a rising star. This award honors young professionals who are setting new standards of excellence in the kitchen and bath industry, and Taylor embodies that vision with her innovative design philosophy.

Rooted in Tradition, Driven by Innovation
While many young designers might feel the pressure to chart an independent course, Taylor embraces her roots with pride. Working within her family's business context, she consistently balances tradition with cutting-edge practices.

Her approach to design combines aesthetics with function, always considering how a space can not only reflect her clients' styles but also meet the practical demands of everyday life. "Design is about solving problems," she said. "It's not just about beauty; it's about creating spaces that work for the people living in them."

Advice for the Next Generation
For Taylor, her achievements are not just a personal milestone but an opportunity to inspire the next wave of interior designers. Her advice for students and aspiring professionals is simple but powerful: "Get as much hands-on experience as you can. Designing isn't just about what you learn in the classroom. It's about working with real spaces, materials, and client needs. Ask questions and build relationships because those connections will set you apart."

Looking Ahead
Taylor Walker's story is one of grit, determination, and a love for her craft. From sketching in classrooms at Appalachian State to designing award-winning kitchens and baths, she's proving that hard work and passion are a winning combination.

With her sights set on the future, Taylor remains focused on what matters most to her: helping clients create timeless, functional spaces that feel like home. And as her recognition in the NKBA Thirty Under 30 shows, she's just getting started.

For aspiring designers, Taylor's story is a masterclass in what's possible with a solid education, an open mind, and the courage to go after your dreams.
