The College of Fine and Applied Arts at Appalachian State University is proud to announce that Professor Marianne Adams, a distinguished leader in Theatre and Dance, has been nominated by the College and the Provost to carry the University Banner at the Spring 2025 Hayes School of Music/College of Fine and Applied Arts Commencement ceremony. Set for Friday, 9 May at 9:00 AM in the Holmes Convocation Center, this honor celebrates not only a milestone in Professor Adams’ illustrious career but also embodies the transformative essence of the arts in our community.
Reflecting on decades of teaching, Professor Adams finds that the most rewarding aspect of her work lies in the freedom to evolve alongside her discipline. Supported by Appalachian State’s commitment to faculty development, she has created 35 innovative courses—ranging from dance and bodywork to expressive arts and somatic sustainability—that continuously push the boundaries of artistic expression. This dynamic evolution has allowed her to remain at the forefront of a field that is as ever-changing as it is inspiring. The opportunities afforded by the institution have not only enriched her creative exploration but have also ensured that her students receive a forward-thinking education that honors both tradition and innovation.
For many in her close-knit department, Professor Adams is much more than an instructor; she is a mentor whose influence resonates long after the final curtain call. She recalls moments when a single interaction—a carefully chosen word of encouragement—became the spark that ignited a student's lifelong passion for performance art. Although pinpointing one defining instance is nearly impossible, the recurring reflections of gratitude from former students speak volumes. Her willingness to balance frankness with kindness has, time and again, proven to be the catalyst that empowers emerging artists to believe in their creative voices.
Professor Adams also emphasizes that the impact of dance extends well beyond the stage. In her classes, ensemble work is not merely about mastering technique but about cultivating a community where every individual's actions ripple through the collective whole. This collaborative spirit teaches students that each choice, however small, contributes to a larger narrative—instilling values like punctuality, discipline, creative problem solving, and the vital importance of “showing up” for one another. Students often credit their ensemble experiences as key pillars in navigating the challenges of both their academic and personal lives, underscoring the profound life lessons woven into each production.
As the Spring 2025 commencement approaches, Professor Adams has heartfelt words for the graduating class. She reminds them that a career in the arts demands perseverance, courage, and sometimes sacrifice—but that the skills honed in the Dance Studies program stand as versatile life tools. Whether it’s learning to collaborate effectively or adapting to unforeseen challenges, the experiences at Appalachian State in dance are directly translatable to success in any endeavor. Her message encourages graduates to carry forward the spirit of the ensemble, embracing both individuality and community as they embark on their next chapter.
Carrying the University Banner is a symbolic role that reflects Professor Adams’ lifelong dedication to the arts and her unwavering commitment to nurturing creative talent. On 9 May at 9:00 AM, as she leads the commencement procession at the Holmes Convocation Center, her presence will not only mark a celebration of academic achievement but also serve as a beacon of inspiration—a reminder that every step taken in the pursuit of art contributes to the larger tapestry of our collective cultural legacy.
