The Appalachian State University Department of Theatre and Dance will present a ballroom dance lecture and demonstration by lifelong ballroom dancers Sandi Finci Solomon and Tony Luis from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, Oct. 7 in the Varsity Gym dance studios (room 208). Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. No advance registration is required.
As part of the event, Solomon and Luis will share the story of their lives in dance as they discuss and demonstrate salsa, swing, the hustle and country two-step. William Burroughs, president of Appalachian's Shag Dance Club, will attend and participants will be invited to join in the fun.
"Sandi Finci Solomon's ongoing efforts to advocate for the role of partner dancing as a catalyst for building community, and as a joyful experience, are exemplary," remarked Kevin Warner, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. "We are delighted to host her and Luis as they share this niche of the art of dance with our faculty, students and staff."
Varsity Gym is located directly across from the parking deck on Rivers Street, adjacent to the Roess Dining Facility. Visitors can park in the Rivers Street Parking Deck and take the walking bridge from the second floor to cross Rivers Street. Varsity Gym is to the left of the walkking bridge, and the dance studios are to the left and down one flight of stairs upon entering the gym.
