Sustainability Spotlight - Stephen McCreery

Stephen McCreery, assistant professor of electronic media / broadcasting in the Department of Communication, is a proponent of sustainable practices and incorporates sustainability into his own personal lifestyle whenever possible. Upon arriving at Appalachian, he noticed an immediate opportunity to improve a current practice in the department. Electronic media / broadcasting students and faculty go through a lot of batteries, which are often recycled or disposed of when depleted. He worked with his colleagues to launch a rechargeable battery program, which allows students and faculty to check out (and return) batteries for their production projects. The spent batteries are then recharged and reissued. The amount of disposable batteries has been drastically reduced, all while exposing students to sustainable practices within their program.

After a more than 20-year career working with the media and in advertising, McCreery completed his bachelor's degree in public relations at North Carolina State University and then went on to earn both his master's and Ph.D. in journalism and mass communication at the University of Georgia's Grady College. His industry focus was radio, where he served as deejay, promotion director, news anchor, morning show producer and account executive. McCreery's love for audio defines his role inside the Beasley Media Complex, which houses both WASU-FM and the new AppTV. His teaching focuses on both audio and video production.
