Spotlight: Applied Design Student Colvin Harvey Interns with London Designer Tino Seubert

Appalachian State University’s Industrial Design (Applied Design) program continues to cultivate emerging designers who are ready to make their mark on the global stage. This summer, student Colvin Harvey is doing exactly that through an internship with acclaimed German product and furniture designer Tino Seubert, whose London‑based studio produces work for clients such as Alexander McQueen and Me + Em.

Seubert’s studio is intentionally small—often just himself and one intern—which has given Colvin an extraordinarily immersive experience. His responsibilities span the design and fabrication process, with a primary focus on assembling commissioned furniture pieces including stools, chairs, and tables. This close‑knit environment has allowed Colvin to observe the full lifecycle of independent design practice: creative development, material exploration, fabrication, client communication, and the essential business operations behind running a self‑sustaining studio.

“This internship is a glimpse into what is possible as an independent furniture and product designer,” Colvin shared. “It’s an ideal opportunity to learn how to operate your own studio and understand the business side of things, which is crucial for any designer hoping to build a self‑sufficient practice.”

Colvin’s growing portfolio already reflects his strong design voice. His project SPLIT Chair earned the 2025 SIT Furniture Design Award, and his broader body of work, including furniture, lighting, and sculptural pieces, can be explored at colvinharvey.com.

We celebrate Colvin’s commitment to craftsmanship, curiosity, and professional growth. His experience in London exemplifies the kind of meaningful, hands‑on learning that defines the Industrial Design program at App State.
