Keith Martin , John M. Blackburn Distinguished Professor of Theatre and Dance, Retires

After more than five decades of extraordinary leadership in the arts, Keith Martin will retire from his role as the John M. Blackburn Distinguished Professor of Theatre at Appalachian State University. His career spans 50+ years, over 450 productions, and acclaimed work across theatre, dance, opera, symphony, film, and television—including a 2010 Emmy® Award.

Keith’s connection to the department stretches back 36 consecutive years, beginning with his service on the Theatre and Dance Advisory Board from 1990 to 2015, including several years as chair. Since joining the faculty in 2011, he has elevated the program through visionary teaching, mentorship, and industry leadership.

His contributions have been recognized with the Plemmons Faculty Leadership Medallion, the Outstanding Service Award, the University College Award for Excellence in Community Engagement, the NC Governor’s Volunteer Service Award, and induction into the SETC Hall of Fame. He has also written more than 250 articles as cultural arts editor and senior writer for Carolina Mountain Life.

A dedicated educator, Keith led 38 student trips to Appalachian’s NYC Loft, guiding 665 students through transformative professional experiences. He also chaired the Appalachian Theatre, helping lead its $10 million restoration.

Before App State, Keith held leadership roles with the Richmond Ballet and Charlotte Repertory Theatre, collaborating with artists such as Tony Kushner and Olympia Dukakis, and advocating for the arts at state and national levels.

Keith’s greatest legacy is the generations of students he inspired. We wish Keith the best in his retirement.
