Karen Duckett Bailey ’89 — 2026 College of Fine & Applied Arts Alumni of the Year

Karen Duckett Bailey, a 1989 graduate of Appalachian State University, was honored as the College of Fine & Applied Arts' Alumni of the Year at the 2026 Alumni Awards Gala. A leader in the entertainment industry and a dedicated mentor to emerging creatives, Bailey represents the excellence, innovation and service that define App State's alumni.

Bailey earned her degree in speech and theater before heading to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Her early work included a television debut on The Young and the Restless, an experience that sparked her interest in the creative and production side of the industry. She soon transitioned into independent producing, where her first feature film, BachelorMan, earned more than 40 awards on the festival circuit.

In 2006, Bailey joined STARZ as vice president of production and played a key role in building the studio's production infrastructure. She later advanced into creative leadership as vice president and senior vice president of original programming, helping shape the network's slate of scripted series. Since 2020, she has served as executive vice president of original programming and production, overseeing strategy for the network's entire original content portfolio, including standout successes such as Outlander and Spartacus.

Beyond her professional achievements, Bailey is deeply committed to supporting the next generation of storytellers. She mentors writers, directors and creative executives through organizations such as Women in Film, the Alliance of Women Directors and the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. She is also an active member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Producers Guild of America and SAG‑AFTRA. Her generosity extends to App State, where she has supported scholarships for theater students.

Bailey's recognition at the 2026 Alumni Awards Gala, held July 11 in the Grandview Ballroom at Kidd Brewer Stadium, celebrated her outstanding professional accomplishments, her leadership within the creative community and her continued engagement with Appalachian State University. She resides in Burbank, California. Congratulations, Karen!
