College Recognizes Outstanding Faculty and Staff with 2019 Awards

The College of Fine and Applied Arts recognized outstanding faculty and staff with 2019 awards for teaching, service, scholarship and advising.

 The college’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year is Dr. Anatoli Ignatov from the Department of Sustainable Development. Dr. Ignatov was nominated by his peers and his students who recognized his caring for his students and the material he teaches, his beautifully complex approach to thinking and ability to include diverse perspectives in his classes. Dr. Ignatov is a 2017 Fulbright U.S. Scholar and has developed and taught 10 different classes at Appalachian State in his four years here. 

The Department of Communication’s Dr. Tom Mueller was recognized for the Outstanding Service award. Dr. Mueller co-founded the Active Learning Residence Community, serves as an advisor for a number of student clubs and internal committees and is known for his willingness to go above and beyond to help others.

Dr. Brian Burke from Sustainable Development was awarded the Outstanding Scholarship award. Dr. Burke has engaged his students in a number of community-based projects including the Todd Listening project and work to help developing countries in North and South America.

 Dr. Jody Servon from the Art Department received the Outstanding Advisor Award for her work advising students on their collegiate and future career paths.

Rob Gelber from Communication received the Outstanding Staff award and was recognized for his work at AppTV and his gift of helping students learn to use complex and evolving technology resources.
