Industrial design senior John Lalevee has been named the winner of the Bernice Bienenstock Furniture Library's 2019 design competition for his "Cromulent" chair, a piece inspired by mid-century modern Scandinavian work. Lalevee bested 32 designs from seven different universities to bring home top honors. In addition to a $5,000 award, he received a membership in the International Society of Furniture Designers professional association. As part of the award, Appalachian's Department of Applied Design will also receive $1,000 to fund academic programs.
Appalachian students have historically done well in the Bienenstock competition. In 2018, Walter Mingledorf '18 won second, and in 2017, Ben Bridges '18 placed first. Read more about Lalevee's award-winning design.
