Appalachian dance faculty facilitate Pilates workshops to strengthen spirit, body and mind

By Nancye Edwards

Appalachian State University Department of Theatre and Dance will sponsor community Pilates workshops for advanced beginner and intermediate students on March 11 and April 8 from 9 a.m.-noon in Varsity Gym on Appalachian’s campus. The March workshop focuses on mat exercises, cadillac and spine correctors and the April workshop focuses on the reformer, the “wunda” chair and the ladder barrel apparatus. The cost is $175 for both workshops or $100 for a single session if paid prior to the start of the first workshop.

Pilates is based on the idea of demonstrating complete coordination in body, mind and spirit. The Pilates form was developed from both Eastern and Western practices, including yoga, zen meditation and ancient forms of Greek and Roman exercise.

The workshop facilitators, Dance Studies Professor Marianne Adams and Dance Studies Senior Lecturer Rebecca Quin, are certified through the New York Pilates Studio, where they received instruction from Romana Kryzanowska, a longtime prodigy of exercise creator Joseph Pilates.

The practice of Pilates involves more than 500 exercises that can be performed lying, standing or sitting. The movement form can be adapted to challenge intermediate students or simplified for beginners. "The Pilates method is designed to stretch and strengthen the muscles of the body, while sharpening the concentration and observational skills of the mind," said Quin.

"The Pilates method has withstood the test of time, as it has proven to be effective for ongoing conditioning and useful as a rehabilitation method,” said Adams. “The emphasis on coordination of mind/body also increases one's sense of mindfulness, a quality that is much needed in today's hectic and multi-focused lifestyles."
