Creative Justice Initiatives

  • Awards will recognize the work of faculty, staff and students whose work embodies creative justice on campus and beyond.
  • Award nominations will open in March 2021.
  • First award recipients will be recognized at the beginning of the 2021-2022 academic year.

Nominees MUST be affiliated with the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Faculty and Staff must have FAA as their home college, and students must have majors in FAA. 

The Creative Justice Awards are an opportunity to recognize faculty, staff and students within the College of Fine and Applied Arts who embody creative justice on campus and beyond. What is creative justice, you ask? Creative justice is a way of being that honors a desire to perform meaningful actions that ripple out into the world as expressions of beauty that uphold equality and integrity between living entities, including human-human relationships and human-nature relationships. People nominated for the CJI Awards exude passion in their work, demonstrated by ideas, initiatives, and/or products they produce that have a tangible, positive impact on their communities. Initiatives need not be those endorsed by the institution, or by another official entity to be considered.

  • Faculty, staff, and students engaged in project-based work that aligns with the mission and goals of the Creative Justice Institute can apply for a mini-grant to fund their work.
  • The first round of grants will be awarded in 2021.

  • 22-minute podcast brings together members of the campus community and distinguished guests for engaging conversation
  • Podcast episodes will be broadcast through AppTV, Appalachian State University’s community TV channel
  • The first episode of The Creative Justice Podcast will premiere Nov. 1
  • Share your podcast ideas, submit a proposal to be a guest host or suggest guests
  • The Creative Justice Institute is conducting a qualitative study of the College of Fine and Applied Arts as a way of identifying opportunities to mitigate injustice in our classrooms, among our colleagues, and across the University.
  • This work will be done with the help of the Center for Academic Excellence and Academic Affairs.
  • Information regarding the study will be sent out at the end of 2020 and begin in January 2021, continuing through January 2022.
  • As study insights become available, they will be shared with faculty, staff, and students.

Sandbox Sessions are one-hour interactive conversations that offer an opportunity to discussion burning questions and other issues facing our campus and broader community.Sessions are open to all faculty, staff and students who would like to participate. 

Topics May Include:

  • Representation issues on and off campus
  • Culture of our institution
  • Current events
  • Interrogating accepted histories and canons
  • Ideas for projects or initiatives
  • ...and more!

Sessions start with a Burning Question.
Burning questions are relevant, specific and generative.
With the help of a facilitator, participants work individually and with a group to explore thoughts and outcomes to the burning question. They work together to move the possibility of the action forward.

  • Allows students to take the lead and offer sessions related to culture, creativity and social justice by sharing trends, vocabulary and socio-cultural movements
  • Flips the teacher-student model and honors students for their leadership and wisdom
  • Students may work individually or in a group of up to four presenters to propose a topic for the Student Leaders Series
  • Students interested in participating are encouraged to submit a proposal here.

The Creative Justice Initiative and Belk Library and Information Commons invite students to author original zines on topics including, but not limited to:

  • Creative Justice 
  • Just Futures  
  • Geopoetics and/or climate justice
  • Digital Poetics
  • Unheard voices/invisible histories
  • Hope in a Post-Covid World

These topics are open to interpretation by the authors. Zines can be solo-authored, or co-authored by pairs or small groups of students.

Zines will be digitized and archived in the Special Collections Research Center as rare books. This zine-making event is part of an initiative to have more student voices represented in the library and its collections as knowledge and cultural producers.

For two weeks, beginning on April 4th, zines will be available to the public to enjoy through a digital exhibition. Once campus has been opened as normal, zines will be available for in-person viewing in special collections.

Logistics:

  • Students requiring materials with which to make zines can obtain a zine kit from the Library by filling out this google form. Kits will be distributed on a first come, first served basis until they are gone. The deadline to request zine kits is February 12.

  • Zines should be no longer than eight, 8 ½ x 11 pages, or sixteen pages when folded.

  • Zines should be completed and turned into the library byMarch 16th, 2021. There will be a clearly marked drop-box for zines on the first floor of the library. For students not in Boone or on campus, zines can be mailed.

  • The front cover of your zine should have a clearly legible title and the name of the author. Inside the front cover of your zine should be the full name of the author, class of _______, the date the zine was completed, and a three-sentence synopsis of the content of your zine for cataloguing. 

If you are new to zine-making, please join Creative Justice Institute Coordinator Cara Hagan for a zine-making workshop on Wednesday, February 3rd from 6-8pm, online. The origins and history of zines will be discussed, as well as fun ways to create pages for your zine. All levels of experience in art and writing are welcome! Our Leadership

About CJI Founder Cara Hagan

Cara HaganCara Hagan is an artist whose practice exists at the intersections of movement, digital space, words, contemplative practice, and community. Her work has been seen on stage, on screen, and on the page across the United States and Abroad. 

In addition to her work as Appalachian State University faculty and a leader on campus, Hagan is:

  • Director and curator for ADF’s Movies by Movers, an annual, international film festival under the auspices of the American Dance Festival
  • Founder of Small and Mighty Acts, a Boone-based grassroots community group whose mission is to help people reach their civic potential
  • Contributor to Medium
