A CD recorded by Appalachian Electronic Media/Broadcasting professor Steve Smith and his wife, Ruth, has been nominated in the 2009 Just Plain Folks (JPF) Music Awards “Best Instrumental Roots” Music Album category. The pair also were selected to perform at a special showcase at B.B. Kings’ House of Blues in Nashville.

Released in 2007, “Dancin’ Cross the Strings” is a unique instrumental blend of Celtic Appalachian music from the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina featuring hammered dulcimer and guitar along with flute, pennywhistle, fiddle, clawhammer banjo, shuttle bagpipes, bodhran, and limberjack.

JPF is an international organization of over 51,000 songwriters, recording artists and music industry professionals and host to the world’s largest independent music awards. Over 42,000 albums were submitted for the 2009 awards from over 160 countries with 10 nominees being selected in each music genre category. Less than one-third of one percent of the CDs submitted were nominated.

The awards show will be held Saturday, Aug. 29, in Nashville. The Smiths’ performance at the House of Blues is Friday, Aug. 28. For more information about the awards or the performance, visit www.jpfolks.com.
