Cadets from Appalachian State University’s ROTC program continued their tradition of placing among the top three schools competing in the annual Eastern Region (ROTC) 5th Brigade’s Ranger Challenge.

Ten cadets competed against 17 teams from across the Southeast in the two-day, 10-event competition held Oct. 19-20 at Ft. Jackson, S. C. Ranger Challenge is considered the varsity sport of ROTC.

Appalachian’s team placed second overall and took first place in rifle marksmanship and the grenade assault course. A Ranger Challenge team from Furman University won first place honors, while the team from The Citadel placed third.

“This was one of the best group of cadets that I have worked with,” said Maj. Robert Gibbard, who coached the team. “Once again, Appalachian fielded a strong team which beat out other programs with a larger corps of cadets, and more funding and resources to support their teams. I am especially pleased that Appalachian took first place in rifle marksmanship and the grenade assault course—two skills that are very important to the infantry soldier.”

Ranger Challenge covers the Army physical fitness test, M16 marksmanship, obstacle course, grenade assault course, orienteering, patrolling and land navigation exams, weapons disassembly and assembly, a tug of war and a 10K road march.

Cadets in Army ROTC programs prepare five days a week for approximately eight weeks to compete in Ranger Challenge.

Cadets and their alternates attending this year’s event were team captains Gabe Stahl and Scott Dimaio, and Nick Rogers, Ben Allumbaugh, Jon Austin, Joseph Beckman, Jeremy Coviello, Barrett Foster, Josh Grimsley, Gary Holloway, Daniel Cooper, Michael Hoffman, Aaron Myrick and Mitchell Joslin.

TWO APPALACHIAN NURSING STUDENTS TO LEAD STATEWIDE ORGANIZATIONS

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Two of Appalachian State University’s 28 nursing students will lead statewide nursing associations.

Jason Moretz of Maiden will serve as the 2008 president of the North Carolina Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). Moretz is set to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Appalachian this December.

A nurse with Presbyterian Critical Care Transport, Moretz served as the 2006 North Carolina ENA President. He also served as the 2005 North Carolina ENA Secretary and was also recipient of the 2005 ENA Rising Star Award and the 2005 North Carolina ENA Nurse Excellence Award.

The North Carolina ENA is the specialty nursing organization for professional nurses committed to the advancement of emergency nursing. ENA’s mission is to provide visionary leadership for emergency nursing and emergency care.

Brooke Kelly Englert of Lincolnton is the 2008 president of the North Carolina Association of Nursing Students (NCANS).

Englert, who entered Appalachian’s nursing program in August, also has served as editor of the Hypodermic, the quarterly publication of NCANS.

NCANS goals are to promote interest in professional nursing organizations, prepare nursing students for participation and membership in the professional nursing organizations, establish a better graduate-student relationship, promote unity and fellowship and encourage student government in schools of nursing, prepare nursing students and graduates for problems affecting nursing and community affairs, become familiar with parliamentary procedures and preside at meetings, stimulate leadership, cooperate with professional organizations in the recruitment of nursing students and afford opportunities to discuss student problems.

Appalachian’s RN to BSN degree is designed for the individual who has earned an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or graduated from a 3 year hospital diploma program and holds a current and active registered nurse (RN) license in NC or a compact state. The BSN degree program provides the academic knowledge and skills necessary to advance to the professional entry level in nursing whether the individual chooses to stay in his/her current position, seek a higher level position, and/or to apply to graduate school.

The College of Fine and Applied Arts, in cooperation with the Office of Extension and Distance education, delivers the undergraduate RN to BSN program to sites in Boone, Hickory and Morganton.
