TEC STUDENTS TAKE FIRST PLACE, HONORABLE MENTIONS AT AWFS

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Three Appalachian Technology students walked away with a first place win and two honorable mentions at the bi-annual Association of Woodworking and Furniture Suppliers (AWFS) Fresh Wood student competition July 19 in Las Vegas.

Michael Poorman took first place in the open category with his piece, “Genesis.” Ashley Hilton received an honorable mention in the casegoods category with her piece, “Brick House,” and Phil Hull also received an honorable mention in the open category for “Down the Drain.”

The awards gala was hosted by Richard Karn, best known as Tim Allen’s sidekick “Al” from the long-running sitcom “Home Improvement.” A highlight of the evening was the special rap performance by “MC Fresh Wood” (also known as AWFS® intern and Appalachian furniture studies student, Thomas Tuck). MC Fresh Wood (complete in wooden sunglasses) and “Rapper Richard Karn” provided a unique introduction to the Fresh Wood awards portion of the ceremony. The two kept the audience entertained by offering a humorous and upbeat history of the competition.

By the end of the night, 38 awards were presented to 34 students in the Fresh Wood competition; a total of $23,750 in prize money was distributed.

Judging for the 2007 Fresh Wood Student Competition began in May with 210 initial entries from 41 different schools from the United States and Canada. The entries were rated by a panel of 10 judges that represent five different aspects of the industry: design, education, manufacturing, retail, and trade press. Out of the 200 plus entries, 58 finalists from 27 schools were selected to proceed to Las Vegas for final judging at the AWFS®Fair. AWFS® covers finalists’ shipping and the majority of costs to bring students and their teachers to the Fair.

All finalists will be featured in the third volume of Fresh Wood, which will be available in January 2008. Order forms are available at awfs.org.
