ESTEPP TO STEP DOWN, ACCEPTS PRESIDENCY AT SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

Dr. Mark Estepp, dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts, will leave his position at Appalachian to serve as the second president of Southwest Virginia Community College in Richlands, Virginia.

Dr. Estepp has served as dean since 2003. Prior to serving as dean, he was interim dean for one year and chaired the department of technology from 1991-2002. He joined Appalachian State as an assistant professor in industrial education and technology in 1984.

“It is with a mixture of excitement and sadness that I enter this next phase in my career,” said Dr. Estepp. “I have enjoyed a great career here at Appalachian. This is a special place, made so by our outstanding students, faculty and staff. “My background and educational training give me a special affinity for community colleges,” Estepp said. “This move puts my wife, Trish, and me in the Appalachian mountains from which we come.”

Dr. Estepp has a doctorate in practical arts and vocational technical education from the University of Missouri, a master’s in industrial arts education from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky; and a bachelor’s degree from Berea College in Kentucky.

“On behalf of everyone who has worked with Mark the 23 years he has been at Appalachian, we thank him for his many outstanding contributions and extend best wishes in his new position,” said Dr. Stan Aeshleman, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. “Mark has provided visionary leadership in his role as dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts, and I will miss him greatly as a colleague and a friend.”

Dr. Estepp succeeds Dr. Charles King, who retired in January after serving as president at Southwest Virginia Community College since the college’s inception in 1967.

An interim dean for the College of Fine and Applied Arts will be appointed prior to Dr. Estepp’s departure in mid-summer.

Southwest Virginia Community College (SwVCC) is part of the Virginia Community College System and is located in the southwestern portion of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Southwest opened in 1968 and offers more than 80 programs of study leading to the associate degree, diploma, certificate or career studies certificate.
