NURSING FACULTY MAKE PRESENTATIONS

Dr. Karen Reesman, chair of the Nursing Department, presented “Resilience Among Abused Women Who Have Left Their Partner, Sought Help from Shelter Staff, and Returned” Nov. 17 to the International Congress of Women’s Health Issues (ICOWHI). The meeting was held in Sydney, Australia.

The International Council on Women’s Health Issues (ICOWHI) seeks to promote the health, health care, and well-being of women throughout the world through participation, empowerment, advocacy, education and research.

Nursing faculty member Debbie Cody spoke at Watauga Medical Center Nov. 15 to approximately 90 nurses, social workers and chaplains about dealing with behavioral issues of clients in an acute care facility. 

Her talk discussed how to take care of patients who have either diagnosed mental illnesses and are in the hospital for other reasons or how to take care of anyone exhibiting emotional and behavioral problems while in an acute care facility like a hospital. The presentation was made in conjunction with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI).

WYN SEES INTERIOR DESIGN IDEAS BY STUDENTS

Students in the Interior Design program, through their service learning studio taught by Tim Dolan, presented ideas on programming and conceptual design for Western Youth Network (WYN) Friday.

WYN will be building a new space adjacent to the new Watauga High School. Students prepared digital presentations which included lighting, color, layout and schematics as well as full printed plans and 3-D models.

Interior Design students at Appalachian presented concepts and design elements Thursday to members working on the new Watauga High School. The meeting was held in the art classroom at Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff.

Approximately 20 students logged more than 2,000 hours researching, designing and preparing the presentation as a project for their class. Elements of the design included daylighting, recycling, staff support, display cases, the media center, lecture spaces, laboratory space, the art room, cafeteria and lobby.

Following the presentation, the students and program coordinator Jeanne Mercer-Ballard were invited to make the presentation to the full board of the school district on Monday, Dec. 11.

 

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS, DONORS RECOGNIZED

The College of Fine and Applied Arts held its annual Scholarship Reception Thursday, Nov. 30, at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. The annual reception recognizes student scholarship recipients and the donors who make the scholarships possible.

 A total of 164 students, parents and donors were in attendance.

“It is important to recognize the hard work of these students receiving scholarships,” said Dr. J. Mark Estepp, Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts. “We are proud of their accomplishments. It is also an important time to recognize the generous donors whose philanthropy is critical to the success of our students.”
