Faculty publish work

Several faculty members in the Department of Communication that have recently had work published.  

Staff member Larry Cornelison had photos published in the August 2006 issue of Popular Communications.  In this same publication Carl Tyrie, associate professor of communication, had an article published titled, “Cold War Radio:  Sometimes Fact Is Stranger than Fiction.”

Dan Hill, general manager of WASU, had an article about the Kellar Radio Farm Institute published in the Aug. 4, 2006, issue of Radio & Records. Monica Pombo, assistant professor of communication, had an essay published in Democracy & Education titled “What’s In a Name? Media Literacy? Critical Media Literacy? Media Education?”

Monica Pombo, assistant professor of communication, had an essay published in titled “What’s In a Name? Media Literacy? Critical Media Literacy? Media Education?”Sharon Pennell, associate professor of communication, had an article published in the Lenoir News-Topic (June 2006) titled “Growing up in the military.”  Sharon also advised the Appalachian Society of Professional Journalism Student (SPJ) Chapter and was rated by the National SPJ Office as a Four Star Chapter.   Communication Department advisors Kelli Fellows and Steve Madden had their article “Persuasive Speaking:  It’s Just a Game” published in Communication Teacher.

ART ON FIRE

Artist in residence Nina Hole from Denmark helped students construct a 20-foot architectural fire sculpture in front of Wey Hall. Built over a period of two weeks, the sculpture was fired in place and became a permanent part of campus. Students from Appalachian, UNC Asheville, Western Carolina University, Blue Ridge Community College, Haywood Community College and Penland School of Crafts have participated in the construction. The residency is sponsored by the Center for Craft, Creativity & Design in Hendersonville.

Debate Team has BIG Success!

Appalachian State University Debate Team Has BIG Success at First Tournament!

Appalachian Debaters have taken home 1st and 3rd place at the Georgia State University tournament this past weekend (September 23-25). With over 150 teams competing, Jay “Reynolds” Patterson and Sherah Fannin took home 1st place and won 14 of a possible 15 ballots during the tournament. Travis Smart and Heather “Nikki” Murdock took home 3rd place. Our App. State debaters also brought home some speaker awards as well. Travis Smart was 1st place speaker, Reynolds Patterson was 3rd place speaker and Sherah Fannin was 5th place speaker. Also competing at the tournament were Joseph Lewis and Brett Peterson who had an exceptionally strong performance for their first tournament.

With the strong performance of Appalachian State University’s Debate Team at our first tournament of the year, Appalachian now sits in the Top-Ten in Rankings for Universities competing in Debate, placing Appalachian ahead of such University and Colleges as Harvard, Stanford and Dartmouth.

On behalf of the entire coaching staff, we want to thank all of our students who competed this weekend and everyone at Appalachian State University for their support!
