WASU SHOW FEATURED IN SOUTHERN LIVING MAGAZINE

The July 2006 issue of the Southern Living Magazine Carolina Living bonus section features WASU’s Robert Parriott and his radio and television cooking shows.

Parriott, who earned his graduate degree in biology from Appalachian, first began a cooking show on MTN, “Robert’s Most Yum Cooking Show,” where he features local chefs. Its success led to a radio show.

“Rock on a Roll” now plays on WASU Mondays from 8 to 10 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters. It teaches Appalachian students how to make healthful, inexpensive meals and includes music to make it fun.

John R. Craft elected as Region 3 Vice-President (IGAEA)

John R. Craft, Professor in the Thomas W. Reese Center for Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology, was elected as Region 3 Vice-President for the International Graphic Arts Education Association (IGAEA). He will be installed at the 81st IGAEA Conference held Aug. 3 at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Craft has taught courses in Graphic Arts for 30 years. Seventeen of those years have been with Appalachian State University. He has had articles published in GATF World, Tech Directions, and the Visual Communications Journal. Recently, he has completed research on the future of catalog production in the United States. The study was funded by the Electronic Document Systems Foundation.

The International Graphic Arts Education Association (IGAEA) is an association of educators in partnership with industry, dedicated to sharing theories, principles, techniques and processes relating to graphic communications and imaging technology. Cary, NC: After completing a nationwide search for qualified candidates, Cary Printing has announced the hiring of Brant Chesner to fill the new position of Operations Manager. Chesner joined the company on January 31, 2005. He became responsible for the operation, organization and efficiency of all production related departments and personnel. DR. JANICE POPE NAMED ASSISTANT CHAIR IN COMMUNICATION

Dr. Janice Pope, professor in the Department of Communication, has been named the department’s assistant chair.

Dr. Pope has been part of the Appalachian faculty since 1995. She primarily teaches in the public relations sequence in the department as well as the core communication courses and Crisis Communication for the Masters of Public Administration program. She also coordinates the department’s internship program.

“I am honored to serve as assistant chair for the Department of Communication,” stated Dr. Pope. “Our department has so much to be proud of.  I hope to contribute to and facilitate our future achievements as well.”

Dr. Pope also has served as the faculty co-director for the Summer Reading Program the past two years and is the faculty adviser for the student chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. She was the 2005-06 recipient of the College of Fine and Applied Arts Outstanding Teaching Award.
