Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

Appalachian State University’s Young People’s Theatre presents the beloved classic “The Garden of Rikki Tikki Tavi” April 21-23 at 7 p.m. in I.G. Greer Studio Theatre.

The play is suitable for all ages. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in advance or at the door.

“The Garden of Rikki Tikki Tavi” is based on a story from Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book,” adapted by Y. York, and is directed by Department of Theatre and Dance faculty and Appalachian Young People’s Theatre (AYPT) Artistic Director Teresa Lee.

The play includes delightful characters such as Rikki the mongoose, Darzee the tailor bird, Chu Chu the muskrat and Nag the cobra. The animals learn a lesson about cooperation as they share the garden and help make it “more perfect than before.”

The cast includes Appalachian students Ashley Wellman as Darzee, Lena Evans as Rikki, Brian Seagroves as Teddy and Nag, and Nicholas Jimenez as Chu Chu. The production staff includes Lisa Huff as scenic designer, Erica Farmer as costume designer, Holly Thugut as tour manager and Rebecca Brown as stage manager.

The production has delighted area school children during its tour this month and is certain to entertain children of all ages during its stay on campus.

The Appalachian Young People’s Theatre is committed to bringing high quality, low-cost theatre to young audiences in North Carolina and the surrounding region. The AYPT Touring Program has been a part of the Department of Theatre and Dance curriculum since 1972.
