Appalachian’s Belk Library and Information Commons Awarded $12,000 Planning Grant for History of N.C. Nursing Web site

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

marylewiswyche.jpg Mary Lewis Wyche is considered the pioneer of organized nursing in North Carolina. She founded the N.C. Nurses Association, which was responsible for passage of the first nurse registration law in the country. Information such as this will be available through a Web site on the history of nursing in the state being created at Appalachian State University.

Belk Library and Information Commons at Appalachian State University has received a $12,000 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) planning grant from the State Library of North Carolina, a Division of the Department of Cultural Resources. The award is made possible by LSTA grant funding from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), a federal grant making agency.

The grant will fund the planning process for a Web site devoted to the history of nursing in North Carolina. Grant funds will be used to identify significant materials for the digital collection, such as photographs, archival records, periodicals and oral histories. The planning process will involve partnering with other institutions and organizations throughout the state to survey collections and build collaboration in preparation for a North Carolina Exploring Cultural Heritage Online Digitization Grant in 2010.

“This will be a wonderful collection of primary resources for everyone interested in the history of nursing in North Carolina,” said University Librarian, Dr. Mary Reichel. “Appalachian State University is making plans to build a new College of Health Sciences and Allied Professions and this project will bring public awareness to the university’s health care efforts.”

The idea for a portal about the history of nursing in North Carolina originated with Dr. Phoebe Pollitt, assistant professor of nursing at Appalachian. “The history of nursing in North Carolina is an important but under researched area of scholarship,” Pollitt said. “I have wanted to build a Web site dedicated to this topic for several years. The librarians at Belk Library and Information Commons have really made my dream come true. I can work on researching and collecting the content, but I could never have done the digitization and the technical end. This is a wonderful collaboration.”

Appalachian’s Department of Nursing participated in the annual North Carolina Nurses’ Association (NCNA) Day at the Legislature March 18. The Department of Nursing co-sponsored the event with NCNA and six other colleges and universities.

Department chair Wanda Stutts and faculty members Debbie Cody, Wendy Miller and Karen Reesman along with a dozen RN to BSN nursing students in the Nursing Leadership and Management course from the Catawba Cohort made the trip to Raleigh. All attended the morning program and heard NCNA President Eileen Kohlenberg, PhD, RN, NEA, BC; Executive Director of NCNA Tina Gordon, MPA, CAE ; President and Chief Executive Officer of WakeMed William Atkinson II, PhD, MPH, MPA; and NCNA Lobbyist Joanne Stevens, MSN, RN, address topics on how to “Find Your Inner Political Geek,” “The Role of Public Policy in Healthcare” and “Hot Topics Impacting Nursing (You) at the N.C. General Assembly.”

After lunch, the 750 attendees walked to the Legislative Building where a Nurse Rally on the Legislative Lawn took place followed by visits to senators and legislative representatives in their home areas and school regions. The nursing faculty and students educated legislators that students in Appalachian’s current program are already RNs and voters who are informed on health and nursing issues. The visitors also spoke about nursing’s stand on issues such as smoking in public places and about Nurse Practitioners. The legislators were encouraged to call on Appalachian’s nursing faculty and students if they have questions on healthcare and/or nursing issues.

Reesman and students visited Sen. Austin M. Allran (R- District 42), Rep. Wil Neumann (R - District 108), Rep. Sarah Stevens’ (R - District 90) Legislative Assistant and Rep. Ray Warren (D - District 88). Cody visited the legislative assistant for Sen. Steve Goss (D - District 45). Stutts visited Rep. Grey Mills (R - District 95). Stutts and Miller visited Rep. Cullie M. Tarleton (D - District 93).

In addition to visits to individual senators and representatives, the faculty and two students attended an afternoon General Session along with Appalachian’s Chief of Staff Lorin Baumhover.

Appalachian nursing professor elected to the Board of the International Council on Women’s Health Issues

Friday, October 24th, 2008

by Josh Jarman, Public Relations Intern, College of Fine and Applied Arts

Dr. Karen Reesman, an associate professor in the Nursing Department at Appalachian State University, has recently been elected to the Board of the International Council on Women’s Health Issues (ICOWHI).

ICOWHI is an international nonprofit association dedicated to the goal of promoting health, health care, and well-being of women throughout the world through participation, empowerment, advocacy, education and research. The board consists of a multidisciplinary network of women’s health providers, planers, and advocates from all over the globe.

To obtain a position on the board, candidates must first be nominated and approved by the council prior to the election. Reesman decided to run for the position and was elected in August. Afaf Meleis, dean of the University Of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, extended an invitation to Reesman to join the board.

“It is a tremendous privilege and honor to serve on this Board,” said Reesman. “We all recognize how critical it is to improve the health and well-being of women throughout the world.”

As a board member, Reesman will help organize ICOWHI’s 2010 Congress. The Congress is held every two years and is conducted primarily to raise awareness of womens’ health care and to disseminate research. The 2008 Congress took place in July and was located in Gaborone, Botswana.

“As a council member and as a board member I think it is my duty to spread the wealth, and, hopefully, increase our membership,” said Reesman. “ICOWHI has nominal dues and a student rate as well.”

Reesman encourages anyone who is interested to visit the ICOWHI website at www.ICOWHI.org. For more information on the Department of Nursing, visit www.nursing.appstate.edu.
